First off, it is better for your dog to always feel happy to return to you. If you call your dog back only to punish him, he will form the impression that you are going to punish him whenever he answers to your whistle recall command. So be nice to your dog each time he answers to your recall command. Praising and rewarding form the best known method for getting him to appreciate that you appreciate him. If your dog senses that you are recalling him to be punished it would come hesitantly. Bear in mind that he is watching both your tone of voice and countenance. Even the way the whistles sounds could make or mar your dog’s whistle recall training. Let him know that answering you quickly is appreciated… make some happy gesticulations and touch him fondly. Touching reassures your dog of your closeness and care. Experts advice that you make your dog sit at a distance and then step away from him, keep some distance between you and then combine voice and whistle by saying “come” and blowing the whistle immediately. Do not start with very long distances, rather, increase the distance as he begins to associate the whistle with a recall. It is a very good training method to always let your dog know that you appreciate that he answers your call quickly. Let him see your happiness through your body movements like milling and wiggling your body etc. Remember that whistles deliver higher pitches than your voice so do not over blow it when calling him to return, ensure that your call does not sound threatening. When training your dog to learn the recall commands with the whistle, sit him at a distance and use the whistle to call him back to you. Start with short distances, increase the distances as he begins to respond to your recall. It is experts' opinion that dogs obey better when seated, so have him sited when teaching him each new command. Finally, all I have been hitting at is that in teaching your dog distance recall with a whistle it is very vital that a cordial relationship exist between the two of you, if not, he could even take off from the distance. Nevertheless, recognize the possibility that success in dog training may not come as fast as you may anticipate, but relentless effort and consistency of commands will sooner than latter reward you with success.
